However, it doesn’t stop there. Here are five quick, easy tips to keep on track in 2016.
1. Wear a Pedometer
Wearable technology is one of the hottest trends lately. This past holiday season, there were many sales on products from Fitbit, Apple, Garmin, as well as a host of Android-compatible fitness watches. Even Fossil is taking a stab at the competition with their new line of Misfit wearable fashion watches. These devices allow you to track your exercise, or your normal activity while you work, which can become a motivating force in your life. Additionally, many of them allow you to monitor your sleep patterns so you can make healthy changes to your routine. Check out your local Best Buy, Wal-Mart or Amazon to see which one suits your needs.
2. Drink Water
This is probably one of the easiest things to change and can have a big impact on your nutrition (and your wallet). Why spend extra money on sugary sodas that are full of empty calories? Even diet drinks, which have zero calories, contain artificial sweeteners and other chemicals that offer zero nutritional value. Drinking enough water helps your body optimize at its normal efficiency, prevents kidney stones, prevents constipation, rids your body of toxins and is good for your skin. Remember: if your pee is dark, you probably aren’t drinking enough fluids.
3. Just Say No (To Sugar)
Every five years, the U.S. government releases dietary guidelines. Just recently, the Obama administration recommended limiting the intake of sugar to 10% of your daily caloric intake. It’s a known fact that type 2 diabetes is on the rise, and Americans are eating more sugar than ever. You might find added sugar listed on the ingredient label in the form of high fructose corn syrup, glucose, malt syrup, sucrose, cane sugar. These excess calories cause a drastic rise in your blood sugar after you eat them and the excess energy is converted to fat. Try avoiding foods with added sugar in order to prevent diabetes, stay slim and maintain more even energy levels during the day.
4. Stop Smoking
Chances are that if you are reading this you don’t smoke. But if you do, just quit. In 2016, it’s painfully obvious that smoking damages your lungs and causes lung cancer. What many people may also overlook is the damage it does to your cardiovascular system, skin and hair. Tobacco use has also been repeatedly linked with a multitude of other cancers and health disorders. Not to mention, its an expensive habit. According to smokefree.org, if you smoke a pack a day, you will spend more than $5,000 a year on cigarettes. So, let’s start 2016 off right: Ditch The Cigs.
5. See Your Doctor, Even If You Feel Healthy.
According to the Medline Plus, from the U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH), all men ages 40 – 64 should visit their health care provider regularly, even if they feel healthy. Blood pressure should be checked twice a year, and if you have other conditions such as diabetes or high cholesterol, it may need to be checked more often. If you are over the age of 34, cholesterol should be checked every five years. Men over the age of 45 should be screened every three years for diabetes. Colorectal cancer screening is usually recommended for men ages 50 and older, but may be earlier if there is a strong family history. There are a multitude of other screening exams and physical tests that are offered and recommended by the NIH, and Titan recommends that you speak with your doctor to see what is right for you.
