Testosterone Therapy & Heart Risk

A common concern many men have when seeking help for low testosterone is the effect the treatment may have on their heart. Although some studies have linked testosterone therapy with a higher risk for heart disease and stroke, a new study funded by the US National Institutes for Health shows otherwise.

The Initial Research

Before delving into the most recent findings, let’s assess the previous argument suggesting that testosterone is tied to heart risk. One such study, reported by PLoS One, identified a group of men seeking testosterone therapy and tracked their progress for 90 days. Their findings showed that men who were undergoing testosterone replacement supplements over the age of 65 had increased their cardiovascular risk by nearly double. The same could be said for those under 65 who had history of heart disease.

Following this and other studies, the FDA announced to the industry that testosterone products must carry a warning label expressing the increased risk of clots in the veins.

The Counter Study

Following the FDA’s ruling, a group of Galveston researchers decided to take this controversy into their own hands. This team examined the medical information of over 25,000 men over the age of 65 who had received testosterone therapy for up to 8 years.

Once the study was concluded, the research was then published in the Annals of Pharmacotherapy, showing that the link between cardiovascular risk and testosterone therapy could not be found. Interestingly, their studies showed quite the contrary. Men who had previously been at greater risk for heart attacks and strokes saw a lower rate of heart attacks than those who had not received testosterone treatments.
